Filter Light or Block Light: The Choice is Yours

When choosing window coverings, there’s a lot to think about. One of the decisions you’ll have to make includes light exposure: Should you filter light or block light? There is no one answer, it just depends on the needs within your space. To make the best choice for your home, go room-by-room. This way, you’ll discover that room darkening may be useful in some spaces and light filtering in others. We can help you through the process.

The Terms

To understand the differences, let’s define some window covering terms. First, we consider “light filtering” shades to be those that provide the best atmosphere for when you want to be positive and productive. On the other hand, “room darkening” shades are more suitable for relaxation-mode. They’re perfect for nap time or a marathon of your favorite tv series. Which types of window coverings would the rooms in your home most benefit from?

Light Filtering Shades

What do light filtering shades do? Quite simply, they filter the light, creating a “pleasant” ambiance, well-lit, but not uncomfortable. These shades allow natural light to glow through the window with sheer or semi-sheer fabrics. These fabrics also protect against harsh UV rays. Depending on the opacity, they may offer a view to the outdoors. For increased privacy, choose a more dense fabric–you get the idea. We can help you with selecting the perfect fit for the needs of your space.

Room Darkening Shades

When the needs of your room include blocking incoming light, turn to room darkening shades. These shades will keep out the majority of the light with heavier fabrics.

But, if your room requires more darkness, employ blackout shades. What’s the difference between room darkening and blackout? Room darkening shades keep out most light, but may allow some to enter at the sides with light gaps. Blackout refers to shades that completely block light from a room–specific features and fabrics help make this possible. Room darkening shades can deliver the right environment in most situations, even during the day. But if you have a need for pitch black dark, you may want to inquire about blackout shades, which seal out the light.

How About Both?

There are times when having both light filtering and room darkening seems to be the best solution. The good news is that we can make that happen for your home. With our dual shades features you can have two shades on one headrail. The light filtering shade can be set in place for filtered natural light and a view to the outdoors. When you want a dark, private atmosphere, simply lower the room darkening shade.

Another shade system that offers two-in-one function and provides the best of both worlds, is the Designer Banded Shade. In one position, the shade allows soft, filtered light. In another position, the shade blocks out the light.

Lastly, layering shades and drapes can be another efficient way of providing different levels of light control and privacy. Enjoy the soft filtered light of sheers while drapes flank the windows. When you want a darker atmosphere, block the light with room darkening curtains. For a truly custom look, explore custom drapes as your most elevated style choice.
